Administrative History

Bratach Dubh was an anarchist publisher active in the 1980s. Bratach Dubh was a joint project of Jean Weir and the McGowan family, who had links with the Hammer & Tongs workplace bulleting at Scott Lithgow shipbuilders. Initially based in Port Glasgow, after the first 5 pamphlets Bratach Dubh moved to London with Jean Weir.

The McGowans were, for a period, based near Liverpool and worked on tenants’ issues with Big Flame, the Marxist group based on the Italian group Lotta Continua.

Many of the pamphlets published by Bratach Dubh contained texts by the anarchist thinker and guerrilla, Alfredo M. Bonanno, with the exception of a pamphlet on the activities of the Angry Brigade.

Scope and Content

This collection contains publications collected by Bratach Dubh from anarchist and libertarian socialist groups from North America, Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Australia, the UK and Ireland including newspapers, journals and magazines. It also contains a small number of posters and leaflets produced in the UK publicising anarchist events and a small collection of news cuttings and articles.
